None so blind as those that cannot see! Blindingly obvious as the nose on one's face. Renewables have been the absolute disaster of the modern world, all to fight non existent climate change. As a 40 year Chemical Engineer specializing in extraction and environmental controls from those processes, I despair that the majority of our "leaders" are lawyers with no clue about where their power comes from or what drives countries wealth.

Don’t forget that when a battery charger increases the load, the only dispatchable generation that responds is usually gas combined cycles, unless you want to discharge batteries to charge batteries… wind, solar and nuclear are usually not dispatchable.

In my example, the "extra" 1500 MWs of solar generation exist to charge the batteries during the day to provide output overnight. Additional generation and storage is required to continue operating through successive low/no solar days.

Ed. Solar generation isn't set aside to charge batteries normally. When battery chargers increase load only dispatchable generation increases. Wind, solar and nuclear generation can't be increased. Batteries consume 20% of the charging energy. The only time batteries significantly reduce emissions is when there is surplus nondispatchable energy and that only happens a fraction of the time on a real time basis. Charging batteries by increasing fossil generation or discharging other batteries is not a good idea.

Batteries, or other storage, would have to be charged by surplus intermittent generation in a Net Zero environment when there would no longer be dispatchable fossil generation.

The short-duration storage issue is relatively straightforward. The intermediate-duration and long-duration storage issue would be far more complex and uncertain.

Of course, if DEFRs are available, why do intermittents plus storage at all?

Good common sense article. IMO the solar grid must embrace every home as a source of power before it makes sense.

That being said ….not going to happen…utility companies are in business to make money not help us out…wind is absurd as anything other than a novelty unless you live in the North Sea area…the whole ESG thing is just another scam from globalist grifters…

The "solar grid" never makes sense. Firming a 25% capacity factor generating source is too capital intensive.

Utilities must make money to survive and continue to perform their essential functions.

Of course, solar owners could go off-grid, but that requires major investment in additional generation and storage.
